John Partridges watercolor workshop is unlike any painting class you have ever taken. A California Central Coast Watercolor Artist, John , has come up with a unique way of teaching the fundamentals and special tricks of watercolor. He has been painting for over ten years and has attended many workshops by other artists. At several of these he was befuddled by the variety & mix of subject matter & skill level of the student artists. . The level of artists ranged from beginners to professionals. Some of the artists could draw while others spent half the day trying to create a drawing worthy of painting. Then, after the drawing was done, the day was nearly over and there was no time left for the student to complete the painting. Although there may have exceptions to this , it was always the beginners that were left behind, and for them little information was learned about watercolor painting techniques.

To provide a solution , John has invented a way to furnish each student a pre-drawn sketch on watercolor paper. Using this new technique he has perfected his teaching talents for the past three years doing one and two-day workshops. Aware of students time and talents, he now offers a class that assures each student a completion of a large half sheet painting, each day. The subject of the artwork varies from the popular California Missions to Cambria Cottages. There are over twenty different subjects offered. In a four-day workshop there is a different painting offered each day. John begins with a short lecture and proceeds to selecting the color choices and summary of the step by step procedure .

Mr. Partridges student success is that they follow in a step by step procedure that follows the instructors lead. Each student completes a painting in 4-6 hours while learning all the way. During the class John supports students with individual assistance .

These proposed new paintings are being developed by the artist. It takes nearly 60 days to finalize the sketches for the computer drawings. Workshops have pre-determined class projects requiring the drawings printed ahead of the class schedule. We have listed these as potential class projects & request your input as to which classes you would like. Special requests are always considered.

What is a One Day Workshop?

This class begins with a short lecture. Students receive the daily painting exercise with exactly the same drawing to paint as the teacher will be demonstrating. The painting begins with a lesson on how to mount the drawing paper onto the students boards and then proceeds with the painting. All of the painting projects take about six hours with a one-hour lunch break. By starting each day at 8:30 we have plenty of time to complete the project by 3:00 or 3:30. When each student has completed their painting the teacher enjoys a short evaluation period with some creative suggestions. During the course of the painting you will learn how to stretch your paper, mix your paints, make soft & hard edges, scrape in trees with a pallet knife, & spatter to add texture. The number of colors is somewhat limited and John recommends that beginners use a limited pallet. The best paintings can be done with a few colors. The recommended list of materials shows three different brands of watercolor paints. It is not absolutely necessary that you purchase all of these items. For most beginning artists the colors of the same brand of paint is acceptable. A three or four day workshop is basically the same except that a new painting of a different subject is created each day. New paintings create new challenges and offer new learning experiences.

Workshop Schedules-Costs & Locations

Costs:

The artist offers a very unique way to learn to paint with watercolors. What you can learn in a few of Johns classes might take a few years with books and Videos. The student cost of $75 per day includes the drawing material for each days class. The daily class takes about 7 hours. Organizations, such as Art Groups, craft stores , resorts etc. , or even individuals that would like to organize a watercolor workshop with John can do so. The organizer will need to provide a location, select the number of days to offer with the subjects to be painted and collect the fees . The organizer should contact Mr. Partridge for details such as date, Location, painting subjects, and minimum & maximum class size .

Locations

The artist lives on the Central Coast of California and offers workshops through the local Citys Parks & Recreation Dept.. A list of classes can be obtained by calling the recreation dept at 805-2373988. New scheduled classes are always being created and the Website will make a effort to maintain a current listing.

In the past John has done numerous demonstration for art groups in the Los Angeles area and of coarse the Central Coast. For the Los Angeles area you can see demonstrations every year at the Catalina Art Festival held in September. For two days, he paints on location during the Festival. For the Central Coast he does demonstration painting during the California, Mid State Fair, held in late July & early August.

Johns unique style of teaching is become quite popular and John anticipates that he will eventually offer classes in others states. Inquiries are welcome.
