The
Welsh tradition of giving gifts of carved spoons to symbolize affection is a tradition which has it's roots in centuries long
past. The old English expression to "go spooning" is
believed to have its' origin in ancient Wales. The oldest surviving
example of a love spoon dates back to 1667.
The
carver would present a spoon to a lady as a show of interest in
her, if the lady accepted the spoon then she accepted his interest.
The spoon was the main eating utensil of the day so the giver
was offering to take care of the lady. The giver would show his
skill by placing different symbols on the wood, each symbol representing
a promise. These symbols were drawn from life situations, eg.,
sailors used nautical symbols, others used images drawn from their
environment such as flowers or leaves. Whilst there is much uncertainty
about the exact history of the love spoon it is generally accepted
that certain designs incorporate specific meanings.Over
the years, love spoons have become more elaborate and decorative,
they have become collectables. As well as being a gift of affection
love spoons are used for all occasions ,from birthdays, weddings,
housewarmings and anniversaries to christenings and parting gifts.
