HOW TO:
USE ICC PROFILES FOR AN EPSON PRINTER
Color management is an everyday problem for the digital photographer. The same photo can look different when
viewed on different monitors and when printed on different printers and different media. EPSON printers and
scanners support basic color management as standard. They also support ICC color management. ICC is an open and
cross platform color management system in which each device is characterised by a "profile" that optimizes color
reproduction.
EPSON ICC profiles are delivered along with the standard printer driver and they can be used with popular photo
editing software like Adobe Photoshop. This How To covers the three steps required to set up your graphic peripheral
devices like a printer and scanner. Please note that this refers only to RGB files.
Since the colour spaces of your monitor and printer differ from each other, to ensure color consistency between what
you see on the screen and what you see in print, EPSON recommends using a 100% ICC compatible application. In
this example, we use Adobe Photoshop Version 6.0
THE SCREEN CALIBRATION
This can be done with the Macintosh from the following menu:
Apple/Control Panel/Monitor/Colour
On your PC you can use the Adobe gamma utility supplied with Adobe Photoshop 6.0
At first you just have to follow the procedure to 'linearize' your screen by setting up the correct colour temperature to
5000K and Gamma Value to 1,8 (Mac) and 2,2 (PC).
You will then have to set up the colour parameters in Photoshop and define your monitor colour gamut.
SETTING UP ADOBE PHOTOSHOP 6.0
To adjust the colour settings within Adobe Photoshop 6.0, first go to Edit/ Colour Settings.
In this window, enter the following parameters:

SETTING UP YOUR EPSON PRINTER DRIVER
EPSON ICC profiles are delivered along with the standard driver. They are automatically installed during the printer
driver installation and are stored on the Hard disk in the following folders:
Mac: System / Colorsync Profiles
PC Win 98/95/Me: Windows / System / Colour
PC Win 2000: Windows / system32 / Spool / Drivers / Colour
On the Apple Mac, EPSON ICC profiles are delivered for each paper type. You can find the required profile by
searching for the paper name. On PC Windows, only one EPSON ICC profile is delivered per printer model.
Download paper-specific ICC profiles for the PC here.
You can manually set up the parameters in the driver in the menu illustrated below (Mode/Advanced settings):

If you choose "No Colour Management" in this screen, the colour management will be done by the Colour
Management Module (CMM: Adobe ACE).
Please do not choose a specific Colour set-up like Automatic, Photo Enhanced or Colorsync because in this case the
colour calibration will occur twice which will have a negative effect on the quality of the output.
Finally, all you have to do is to specify the respective EPSON profile as output profile within the print menu (See
illustration below). This also applies for your self-made ICC profiles.
