The stories Jane Lawton Baldridge tells are the stories of lives of the past -- distant and recent. Some of them are her deeply personal stories; others recall lives of people around her. Yet they all seem to convey a tale in the same manner. Old photographs, newspaper clippings, found objects and hand-written letters document life as the artist has seen and experienced it. And using her artist's eye and her computer, she has combined these documents and images to create digital collages, so to speak.

Sonia Katz:
collage

I paint on Japanese paper, cut it into shapes, and paste them down on other heavy watercolor paper.
"I am imagining these shapes as real objects having weight and motion. They may balance on one another, float, fall, or combine intostructures. The colors and actions of these shapes combine to create a harmony almost like music; to stir emotion in a language without words."

I was educated at the University of Chicago (B.A., M.A.), Cambridgeshire (England) Technical College, and at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

I was a sculptor in stone, plastics, bronze and steel, from 1960 to 1979, beginning collage in 1980.

Other activities include teaching, writing critical reviews, and work in arts organizations. My sculptures and collages have been widely exhibited and collected.
