BJ
Arnason began her career at the age of 18 as a commissioned
portraitist. Working from her studio in Mclure in South Western
British Columbia she finds her inspiration from her surroundings
and the convenient access to galleries in Vancouver and
Kamloop's area. She has conducted popular pastel workshops and
art classes and has adjudicated art exhibitions.
She has scaled
back her teachings so that she can concentrate on producing
thematic bodies of work. Two of her most recent paintings are
" Garden Series " and the " Dancing Spirit "
series seen in her Kamloop's Pow Wow Series.

Born
in Edmonton, Alberta,
I have painted and
drawn since I was three, I am told. I was greatly encouraged in
art by Mrs. E. Frazier of Edmonton, a teacher in my public
school.
I am an active
member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, working toward
Signature status, and an Associate Member of the Canadian
Society of Painters in Watercolour. I can be found almost every
Thursday morning at our Thursday AM Painting group at the Visac
Gallery in Trail, B.C. Recently we formed a group of five
painters known as 'The Kootenay V and Associates' and I am one
of the founding members. I have completed the Minneapolis 1st
year Commercial Art Course. I have enjoyed instructive workshops
with P. Margolin of Agenta, an international artist, and taken
many wonderful courses through the Federation of Canadian
Artists West Kootenay Chapter. I have taught workshops myself
with School District #20 and tutored several young painters on a
yearly basis. I love to paint and sketch outdoors and have
experience in pet painting on a commission basis. I am presently
involved in life studies and enhancing my personal drawing
skills by going back to the basics and colour theory studies
that keep my painting strong and true. |

Simple Process
|
My artistic horizons were defined from the start of my vocation. I knew from very early on that I did not want to be an artist whose paintings are used only to adorn or fill empty, tedious or unsophisticated space. Through painting, I have been able to find myself and communicate in spiritual form with others.
Terencio's phrase, I am a man, and nothing that concerns a man do I deem a matter of indifference to me" expresses my basic existential preoccupation. In a world of constant convulsions, I have a human commitment to document what I see and feel. This puts no subject matter off limits to me. Pain, loneliness, anger, injustice & hope have often motivated me to face a blank canvass. My spirit reacts, twists, reflects, and finishes doing the essential: expressing itself with vigor onto the canvas. |
