Artist's Statement

"I am drawn to the water and the beautiful coastal landscape. Springtime inspires me with its rich palette of colorful flowers. My paintings spark the imagination by capturing the essence of my subject. I invite my viewer to take a closer look, to participate in the painting, and to experience the reason I love to paint. Spirit and Flesh
Water Color 26 x 33
Price: $600

Karl J. Volk

Web Site    United States

I suppose I can call myself an opportunistic artist since I have no strong commitment to one way of doing things. Yes, I do watercolors. It is my main medium. But I do other media as well and each media seems to call for a different part of me.
In my watercolors I sometimes try to be realistic but never totally so. Yet in other instances, I take several photographs and combine elements from each to make a dramatic statement. I still others I work from rapid sketches done at performances of the dance or the theater.
These sketches work wonderfully well in my silicone intaglio prints. Often these sketches are directly drawn on the program of the event and all that information is included in the print.
My collages might start with something I picked up from the street. Of they might start with a theater sketch and I fill in the spaces with colored paper, crayons, watercolors or other media.
Sometimes News events start me going as for example, the piece I call Requiem for Mathew. This piece was made to remember Mathew Shephard who was beaten and left to die while tied to a fence in Wyoming because he was gay.

Meadow in Early Light

Danielle Shier

Web Site      United states

My name is Danielle Shier and I have been an artist most of my life, doing professional work for the past 17 years. I was born in Montreal, Canada, and grew up in St. Lambert, Quebec. There I spent much of my early childhood outdoors, exploring the many untouched wooded areas by the wide and rushing St. Lawrence river. When I was nine we moved to New Mexico, where I loved to draw, write and act out the stories of my vivid imagination. The years spent there were magical and instilled a love of the U.S. Later, we returned to Quebec where I studied art in school, got married, took art classes at night while I worked during the day, moved to the U.S., had two children and lived my life, never forgetting my passion for art. I would draw my babies in the bathtub, by the beach, draw from my imagination, study art books and so continued honing my talent. By the early 1990s I had mastered colored pencil and created several colored pencil posters which were published by Angel Graphics and very successfully sold nationwide. I also did commissioned pieces and based on that work was hired by Bovard Stained Glass Art Studio in 1992, where I was employed in the art department for five years, painting landscapes and biblical scenes on glass.

For the past few years Ive studied and painted landscapes in pastel and have won awards and shown my work in several Iowa Galleries. I am currently represented by the Iowa Artisans Gallery and Catiris Art Gallery in Iowa .
